So the wiki implies that Avians are basically humanoid with feathers and small yellow talon-nails. Is this correct or are they a tally far more birdlike than that and that just isn't stated anywhere.

There's some suspension of disbelief required because we can't rep things like bone structure, height, body size, etc. Beyond that the racial reps are the differences between a human and avian.
