Underworlder,

I bring you news. From beneath the iron-laced balconies and flickering gaslight of New Orleans a new Underworld Guild gathers like a secret in the shadowed heart of Louisiana. Surrounded by deadly bayous, crumbling cemeteries and the tangled embrace of cypress trees, Louisiana’s dark lore is a tangled tapestry of ghost stories, forbidden magic, and whispered curses, stitched together from centuries of conquest, tragedy, and survival. We barely needed to write a setting description. It already existed OOG.

Please join us in welcoming Underworld LARP Louisiana, Guildhouse Chanté Noir!

Hidden deep in the choking embrace of the southern bayous of Arthos, the town of Chanté Noir is more whispered about than visited. Locals say the name comes from the black song the swamps hum at dusk, a low, droning melody that seems to follow travelers long after they’ve left the waterline. The origin of the settlement is lost to rot and time, but the crumbling stonework foundations and rust-bitten wrought iron fences suggest the hands of a long-forgotten colonial power.

Chanté Noir is an unclaimed settlement, no proper Baron or recognized noble lays claim to it, and none seem eager to. The town stands on soil soaked with old blood and older curses. Its people, those few who remain, are a strange breed: weathered, wary, and fluent in both the old tongue and the quiet signs used to ward off things that crawl from the marsh after nightfall.

The surrounding swamplands are a tangled mess of half-sunken manors, leaning cypress trees, and fog-thick trails that shift from one season to the next. Folk legends speak of the Marais Chanteur, "the Singing Marsh", which is said to lure the lost to their deaths, their final screams woven into the endless nighttime hum.

Almost as dark and terrifying as the land itself, join me in welcoming your new GMs:

Adam Warmhold

Meet Adam, a longtime LARP enthusiast whose passion breathes life into every storyline.

From a young age, Adam thrived in a variety of sports. Football, wrestling, baseball, and hockey, building a foundation of athleticism, teamwork, and discipline. After graduating from high school in New York, he transitioned into the world of professional wrestling and combat sports, dedicating a full decade to honing his craft among the ring, the training gym, and the roar of the crowd. But, Adam's passions didn’t stop there. He also cultivated a love for immersive, theatrical experiences, spending nearly ten years at the acclaimed New York Renaissance Faire performing as a stage combatant. These combined experiences solidified his love for giving back to a waiting audience. Even as the fair’s torches dimmed, he carried that energy forward into spooky realms at the Faire’s affiliated haunted attraction, “The Forest of Fear.”

For over ten years, Adam has immersed himself in the world of Live Action Role-Playing, playing, organizing, and staffing more than half a dozen LARPs across the Eastern US. From navigating the ruins of a post-apocalyptic wasteland to enchanting fantasy realms and unraveling supernatural mysteries he's done it all with flair and dedication.

Since 2021, he’s been a pivotal force in the Underworld LARP community, where he joined the original Shaper team at Underworld Dark Harbor in his home state of Florida, taking over as the Head of Plot shortly after and has remained on that team for over 4 years.

When he's not conjuring imaginative tales or infusing playful dread into his friends' lives, Adam is probably off adventuring with his wife, Sarah, whom he met at a LARP event, no less. Their shared love for live‑action role‑playing is still a cornerstone of their connection today. However, when the costumes come off, Adam doubles down on the fun, he’s a devoted gamer across multiple formats, diving into tabletop RPGs, collectible card games, and board games with equal enthusiasm.

It’s this deep love for LARP and his unwavering desire to give back that inspired him to step up as Guildmaster for the newest Underworld chapter. With a love for storytelling as vivid as the worlds he helps bring to life, Adam is ready to guide you into the songs and shadows…Welcome to Chanté Noir.

Lia Leleux

Since first picking up a foam weapon in 2018, Lia has been a whirlwind of costuming creativity, rulebook knowledge, and boundless enthusiasm. Two years as a New Player Liaison taught her the fine art of shepherding wide-eyed recruits into fearless adventurers, while her time as “Dragon Mom” in Uw Toronto earned her a reputation for equal parts kindness and ferocity. Whether she’s teaching a newcomer how to land their first “fatal” blow or rallying a guild for a late-night quest, Lia is rarely seen without a grin and a plan.

In her travels through UW Toronto, Lia once sat upon the Council, where her voice carried as much weight as her foam sword. She’s known for weaving rich stories into her games, sprinkling in just enough chaos to keep everyone on their toes. Wherever she goes, the adventure is bound to be grand, the laughs plentiful, and the snacks excellent.

Beyond the field of battle, Lia’s own saga is worthy of song: a Canadian traveler whose fateful meeting with her husband in the realm of World of Warcraft led her across borders to the United States. There, she claimed a new party - three beloved stepchildren, and a homestead guarded by a loyal hound and two mischievous cats. Fierce protector, devoted stepmom, and champion of all creatures great and small, Lia’s life, both in and out of game, is a quest well worth telling.

Please join me in welcoming our NEW Underworld LARP Toronto Guildmaster’s, Patrick McHugh and Jeff Czetwerzuk. In addition, make noise for the birth of a new global Hydra head, Underworld LARP- Guildhouse ??? (dramatic mystery music)

Patrick and Jeff - Welcome to both of you. Please enjoy the shoes we have left for you to fill. Ted left a dead mouse in one of his <3

I’ll tell you something, when we were planning on what to do next it really just looked like closing Toronto was our easiest option. We did not expect these two champions to appear from thin air like evil wraths and take the helm. We are incredibly grateful and excited to see what they can do with it. This chapter of Underworld Toronto is a new beginning, a new town and a new place on the global map. There will be no carry over with Jericho stories as they wished to have the cleanest slate possible. We are happy to oblige.

Here’s a little about your new Guildmasters:

Patrick McHugh
The first time Patrick LARPed was 2017, and he has been progressively getting more involved in the scene as time passed. From making full chest surgery reps to mowing the lawns, Patrick’s been involved with Underworld more than most players, helping out in any way he can. This year he whet his blade as a leader on the Logistics team. In addition to those duties he has also been a free hand at NPC camp, covering for the Lead Shaper when needed.

A forever improv Dungeon Master, board game enthusiast, proud father of a wonderful daughter, Patrick now steps up to run the show with his partner in crime.

Jeff Czetwerzuk
Jeff has been an UW Larper since 2013 and found out about Underworld LARP with his brother at Fan Expo where he participated in and won the sword fighting tournament. His brother swept the competition the next day and the two, feeling victorious, decided to try out the real thing. After his first game Jeff was sold and has now been playing Underworld ever since, often taking some stints Monster Marshalling, weekend NPCing, Shaping and Narrating.

Jeff’s love for fantasy worlds and role playing began when he was quite young but especially so at about the age of 11 or 12. Jeff remembers going to a friend's house and seeing a DnD game setup. As Jeff walked in and saw the pencils, sheets of paper, figures, and dice he chuckled at the idea and said no way he would play DND. Well next thing you know after his friend convicted him to sit down and give it a shot, Jeff was rolling dice and shooting arrows well past midnight - and hasn’t looked back since.

Other hobbies Jeff enjoys are camping, playing trading card games like Magic, playing various video games, playing board games and enjoying time with family friends and his dogs. Jeff is excited to give back to the community and the game he has enjoyed so much the past 10 years and can’t wait to do so in a meaningful way.

We wish you both the best in this and we hope the Global community welcomes them to our dysfunctional family. I'm personally very excited to retire from event running and build my bog Wytch cabin in our swamp. More updates soon!

Jericho Players - Characters still alive after Hallows’, in the Toronto Chapter, will be ported in some manner to the new Guild town. OOG Transfers are not necessary and will be automated. Frag totals are being kept as is. Patrick and Jeff wish to continue playing on Vandalheim (our old site) and we are happy to have them. We didn’t spend $9000 on a Skein Gate for nothing. Both of these gentlemen have also agreed to abide by our old cabin policy. That is to say, if you’re an active player, and you have built a cabin, you can continue to use it. If you are not an active player, you will likely get a message soon from the new team, asking for some updates. Nobody is looking to seize cabins, we just want them used and kept in safe order.

Guildhouse Howling Wilds will be opening full season In the Spring of 2024 but who knows what happens between now and then, they might want to do something smaller in scale to get the ball rolling. As you can imagine, they have their work cut out for them, as a starting Guild from scratch is tough. So please, I encourage you to join their socials, help them build hype, give advice and support however you can. And travel… go play their game

Guildhouse Howling Wilds will be run by Guildmaster’s Taylor Allan and Ryan Jackson and they will be running on their own dedicated site. That site is currently being used for all sorts of amazing inclusive events themed towards kink, pride, and a half dozen other subcultures that I know all you larpers are likely into. I’ll include the link to their site below. They host really good events and now they will join the UW LARP fam. Exciting times.

Here’s a bit about your GMs.

Taylor Allan
Taylor is a long-time Underworld LARPer who began LARPing with Jericho in 2012. He was hooked after his first game and jumped in right away, using his costuming skills gained from cosplay and acting skills to really get into character. He often volunteered to NPC (back before it was mandatory), ran convention booths, and even joined Underworld on Dragon's Den. He's an avid lover of roleplay and worldbuilding, and is a shameless alt-aholic who quickly realised NPCing scratched that itch - with the added benefit of creating incredible experiences for other players. Beyond LARPing, Taylor loves camping and roughing it in the woods - so you can see how LARPing is a perfect fit for him!

Ryan Jackson
From the first time Ryan LARP’d, he was immediately hooked as it combined so many of his passions and interests. Ryan grew up loving theatre, improv, and bringing a role to life. With his elaborate costuming, fantasy makeup work, and performing as a drag queen, he has brought hundreds of looks and characters to life. He is excited to create and play diverse and memorable NPC characters at the Howling Wilds.

Ryan is one of the owners and founders of Fox Haven, the venue where the Howling Wilds calls home.

There’s probably a good correlation between how much you put into an event and how long it takes to recover enough to say thank you. We put a lot into this event. This was the toughest Warcry I’ve ever done but we did it and we only did it because of all of you.

So, I hope you had fun, I hope you enjoyed the stories we worked so hard to tell, and I hope you made a ton of new friends (and at least 3 enemies).

Tammy and I want to thank my entire Shaper and Narrator team first. Kieran, Trevor, Jay, Sethan, Jeremy and Adam. You all really pulled through and exceeded expectations. Special thanks to Kendra and Anthony who did a bunch of prep but couldn’t make the event. Our Narrators Kae, Bianca, Jon, Monica, and Miranda were the best. You all pretty much stepped up and shaped at times. B was the best Black Wytch.

Our Monster Marshals, Jeff and Coleman were insane. You guys did so good and never once appeared frustrated. Given how quickly we had to deviate from the game plan, you guys took it all in stride.

Our Site Manager and Lead Logistics, Patrick and our NPC Camp Lead, Thai, both of you guys showed up well before Warcry and helped us get the land and props in order. You guys did so much and we’re so grateful.

Our Log Team, Gaylen, Val, Caro, Jordan, and Lilly. Max’s Armour and Weapons Marshal team, Rio and Meagan, all did a fantastic job. Same with our last minute but incredibly important photo ninja’s, Cass and Michael. Thank you, you saved us from a promo perspective.

I want to personally thank Val for stepping up and playing Revna Mothersblood for us. Val was supposed to PC that event but she did me the biggest solid and helped cover for Kendra when she got sick. Val, you did an incredible job with Revna. You made this game. We had some Mournfall people that stepped up and took roles / leadership positions when they didn’t have to. I don’t know everybody but Max, Chris, and Andrew (best) stood out to me. Thank you to all of them. Same with Kyle Fair (Blood and Glory!) who helped run some cool RP elements of a few of the final mods that really made them pop. I also want to thank my partners in crime, Tammy and Edward. Tammy just is Tammy and did everything and I love her for it. Edward played the Mortigiest (RIP) and came all the way out from Toronto just for the hour-long role. We couldn’t have done it with any other player.

Give it up also for Greg and his tavern crew. Greg did a TON of work to get this together in short notice. If you owe him money… PAY HIM. He earned it. <3

Finally, our GMs for showing up in force, dragging their players with them, and also helping us out on the backend when needed. We want to thank our NPCs, shifties and ultimately you, our players. You guys did a great job. Everybody looked amazing. Your kit, your character development and your desire to roleplay is what sets UW above other LARPS. I am proud of what we did here last weekend.

If I missed anybody, please throw me a PM. Event Summary is getting proofed and getting close to closing this chapter.
Until next time.

Go to Warcry!

Thank you, that is all.

Alright fine, let me start by introducing you to your multinational team. We’ve pulled players from multiple guilds across multiple countries. Please welcome your Shaper, Narrator and Staff teams!! I absolutely suck at graphic design so just cut me some slack on these sad posters. I did my best.

I have a meeting with our webdev’s next week to get our Global website updated to include a FAQ and some Warcry specific info but here is the coles notes:

Date: Aug 4th, 2023 to Aug 7th, 2023
Location: 36 Walker’s Road, Fenelon Falls Ontario.
This is 100 acres of dedicated LARP site owned by Guildhouse Jericho. Site will have air conditioned bathrooms and hand washing stations.
Tavern: Working on it.
Cost: Full weekend tickets: $150 CAD
Early Tickets: $130 CAD (post dates shortly)
Discounts: Save $15 if you prelog and pre-purchase tickets (once logistics opens)
Save $15 if you take a 4 hour NPC shift
Please note: This Global event is a profit share (assuming there is some) and is divided up fairly by the staff who run it.
Blankets: 2

Event Prelog will open July 1st, 2023. We’ll also get a form up next to allow you to submit questions easily.
While our Org Chart is mostly up to date it’s still a long time between now and Warcry so we may update as needed. Shortly we will be working on assigning a staff member to help those travelling in with anything they may need (tents, large weapons that don’t fit on planes, etc)

Vendors: Coming soon!

Stay Tuned!

Warcry 2023

How has it been four years since our last global event? Alright I’ve procrastinated this as long as I could. Warcry 2023 is officially in Fenelon Falls Ontario, on land I own called Vandalheim. It’s the same location where we run our Jericho events. We got players coming from all over the world. I got 20+ in Florida, I don’t know how many from Alberta but a good chunk! Nova Scotia and hopefully Japan… we got a game brewing.

That being said, we need help. I need Shapers, Narrators, Monster Marshals, and the whole crew. Currently our Global Warcry team is myself, Kieran Lawless, Scott Hopkins, and Trevor Moores-Mollica (Our Mournfall GM crew) and while we’ve got the over plot nailed down, we need more writers and folks to fill amazing bad guy roles. I guess good guys too.

I will say the four of us cannot run a Warcry solo. Not at the quality you expect and deserve. I’ve broken down the positions into Greater and Standard Roles. Greater roles we NEED, Standard we also need but in lowercase. If you’re applying for a Greater role and you are having troubles getting here, reach out at the email address below and we’ll see if we can help out. Warcry is a profit sharing event and getting your expenses covered is considered overhead.

Site Update
This will come soon but we’re going all out. We’ll be renting air conditioned bathrooms and we’re going to try for showers. We’ll post more once we get a little organized.

Important Links

Other than that, here is the application and if you have any issues please email us below!
Global Shaper email Warcry2023@uwlarp.com
Warcry OOG Update Discord Channel https://discord.gg/nqZeGDCtZG
Warcry 2023 Staff Application https://forms.gle/RVLo4N2QwkWjau6z9

Hey folks! We’re now opening up applications for our London Guild, which is located in the Elgin/Middlesex/Lambton/Chatham-Kent/Essex area of Ontario. This guild is one of our oldest and largest and has incredible potential to grow even further. It comes with a very active local player base and receives visiting players from other guilds nearby. On average it has 400 to 500 guild specific players active in the database and an average of 100+ players prelogging per event. With our upcoming expansion into the United States, this guild is in a perfect location to take advantage of cross-border players. The process below explains how you can apply to become its guildmaster. To apply, send an email with your application to comments@larp.ca with the following questions answered:

Name of applicants in your group

History of LARPing, both in general and specifically at Underworld

Staff experience in Ralinwood or other Underworld Guilds

Where you live

Location you’d prefer to run events

Special experience or skills that would help be a great Guildowner

General plans for the guild - what would you change?

We will keep the applications open for 2 weeks, closing at midnight on August 22nd. We’re a little flexible in this deadline and given we’re not running events right now we’re happy to extend this period if you’re interested in applying but can’t get an application package together in this time period. We'd rather wait a little longer and pick the right GM than rush it and miss out. At the end of that week we will review the submissions and remove any that we believe are not a good fit for this guild. We will then require the remaining applicants to sign a nondisclosure agreement. Those that do will be sent a copy of our current guild franchise agreement and the guildowner’s guide to review. At this stage a list of applicant names will be posted publicly and we will collect feedback from the playerbase for 2 weeks. At the end of those 2 weeks, each applicant group will be interviewed and given a chance to ask questions. Finally, a candidate will be chosen and given the opportunity to sign the contract.

We will be asking you questions on the following qualities:

1) Sense of Long Game Balance

2) Discretion

3) Safety of your customers

4) Saying No / Accepting loss for the betterment of the game.

5) Prioritizing New Players

Linked below is an example of a great application when we were looking for a Edmonton / Kalidor GM. Not everybody has to apply to this standard but it's a level of professionalism we liked to see.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GMJcjyRWWzD_52z_37z8acxRS1rPNBWx/view?usp=sharing

If you have any questions please email Underworld Global at comments@larp.ca

Good luck!

We've designed a framework for Guilds to build their harassment policies from.

“Harassment” means engaging in a course of unwanted and inappropriate comments or conduct against a person that is known or ought reasonably to be known to be unwelcome.

“Sexual harassment” means engaging in a course of annoying and unwanted comments or conduct against a person because of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, where the course of comment or conduct is known or ought reasonably to be known to be unwelcome.

"Sexual Assault" means sexual contact with another person without that other person's consent. Consent is the voluntary agreement of the complainant to engage in the sexual activity in question.

"Discrimination" means an action or decision that treats a person or group negatively for reasons such as their race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, etc.

Reasonable action taken by Guildmasters relating to the management and direction of staff and volunteers is not harassment.

Harassment and discrimination will not be tolerated, condoned, or ignored at Underworld LARP. If a claim of harassment or discrimination is proven, disciplinary measures will be applied, up to and including permanent removal from game, i.e. banning.

Underworld LARP is committed to maintaining a comprehensive strategy to address harassment and discrimination, including; providing an effective and fair complaints procedure; and promoting appropriate standards of conduct at all time.

Underworld Global expects that each of its Guilds will maintain a safe environment for its playerbase. Local Guildmasters will moderate and arbitrate the behavior and enforcement of their players. Underworld Global will moderate the behavior of the Guildmasters and the enforcement of their policies.

Below is the procedure if you have been the victim of harassment, discrimination, sexual harassment or sexual assault. This process will almost always start with your local Guildmaster unless they are implicated in the accusation.

Framework For Filing A Complaint

In short: The complainant must file the complaint in writing via email with either the Guildmasters or the Guild Liaison, or if required, with Underworld Global if the Guildmasters and/or Liaison are not appropriate.

Options for Filing a Complaint:

If this is an emergency, please contact the Guildmasters by any means necessary and/or your local police department.

Email the Guildmasters. Complaints should be in writing via email to the Guildmaster’s official accounts. If complaints were made in person at events, especially for things like time-sensitive issues, a follow up email to make the complaint official must be completed post-event. In regards to issues that are not time sensitive at events, Guildmasters will only take action only after receiving the email and performing a proper investigation. Complaint emails should go directly to the Guildmasters and not to staff or volunteer positions other than the Liaison. Complaints made to Shapers are not formal complaints. Complaints sent to the shaper email account may not be treated as formal complaints, but Guildmasters should ask the player sending the complaint to the shaper account if the player wants to file a formal complaint to the Guildmasters account.

Email the Guild Liaison. Each guild should have an alternative contact person (known as a “Liaison”) besides the Guildmasters to send their complaints to. Perhaps the complaint would prefer to speak to someone of a particular gender or would like a second opinion regarding if they should escalate the complaint to an official one. The Liaison’s identity should be clearly identified in the signature of the email as well as in the Guild’s staff directory so people know who they’ll be talking to about potentially sensitive information. This person will be instructed to keep complaints received in their official capacity (to their official emails) strictly confidential. This person is the only exception to the ‘no second party complaints’ rule - this person can bring complaints to the Guildmasters attention if the player requests it. This person cannot keep a complainant’s identity secret from the Guildmasters once the complainant has directed the Liaison to file a complaint on their behalf, but may request that the information be kept confidential from the Guildmasters until that point. Note that the Guild Liaison cannot conduct an official investigation or issue punishments, only the Guildmasters can.

Email Underworld Global. Anyone can send a complaint to Underworld Global about concerns within their own guild but know that unless the complaint is about the Guild Owners themselves (meaning, it’s something that the Guildmasters could not investigate without bias or damage to the brand) it is best to contact the Guildmaster instead. Please recognize that Underworld Global will refer complaints to the local Guildmaster unless that Guildmaster is implicated in the accusation. (See final section on when and why Underworld Global would step in).

Important Notes:

In almost every circumstance, Guildmasters should not accept anonymous complaints. It is difficult if not impossible to perform a proper investigation or take action from them. Anonymous complaints are different from complaints sent in confidence, the difference being that the Guild receiving the complaint knows who it came from.

A complaint must be made by the victim in the case for an investigation to begin. Guildmasters are not required to investigate or follow up on complaints made by second parties. If you see a problem, the best thing you can do is support your friend and encourage them to make the complaint

While we don’t encourage anonymous complaints, if there is no other option then they can be sent to the Guildmaster with the intent of bringing something to the Guildmaster’s attention, so they can monitor that player in the future.

Once a complainant submits a complaint the Guildmaster is permitted to take action to protect other players based on the information provided. While the Guildmaster should do what they can to keep identities in confidence if desired, they should also not risk the future safety of other players if the accuser requests that no action be taken.

Suggested Framework for Investigating a Complaint

Review the complaint. Upon receiving the complaint from the player, the Guildmasters should respond to confirm receipt and confirm that they’ll be starting an investigation into the complaint. The Guildmasters at that time can ask the complainant to provide any evidence or the names of witnesses to the Guildmasters.

In situations where criminal behavior is alleged, the complainant should be encouraged to contact the police. Guildmasters are not law enforcement and should never believe they are acting in their place.

If appropriate, the Guildmasters may advise other Guildmasters or Underworld Global of the complaints, the outcome and the accused’s punishment, as appropriate or required.

Inform the Accused. The accused should be made aware of the investigation as soon as possible after the complaint is filed. At that time, the accused should be informed of the accusations, a typical range of punishments (though it should be clear that the possible punishments may change as the investigation progresses) and an approximate deadline by which the Guildmasters will reach a conclusion or finish the investigation. The Guildmasters at that time can ask the accused to provide any evidence or the names of witnesses to the Guildmasters in response to the accusations.

In most situations, the accused should be placed on a temporary suspension while the investigation is ongoing.

Investigate and collect evidence. During the investigation, the Guildmasters should collect evidence (screenshots, text messages, group chats, etc.) and speak to witnesses directly (whether via text or over voice chat). Evidence should be in written form such as emails or screenshots as much as possible. Those with first-hand experience should be prioritized.

Report Conclusions and Impose Consequences. Once the investigation is concluded, the Guildmasters should prepare a written record of outlining what the Guildmasters learned, what the Guildmasters determined happened, and the consequences that will flow from it. This does not have to be long. The Guildmasters should then inform both the accused and the complainant of the results of the investigation and any consequences or outcomes of the complaint.

Witnesses and other involved parties are not entitled to know the outcome of the complaint and investigation process, but the complaint and the accused may share the outcome with them if they wish.

Important Notes:

As much as possible, Guildmasters should do the investigation into the harassment complaint themselves.

Hey all! This post is directed toward those who are potentially interested in assuming the reins of our Edmonton/North Alberta Guild.

This is our second oldest guild and there is a substantial LARPing population in this guild’s territory. This guild also comes with an active player base, all the characters in the existing database (over 500) and within range of two other guilds for visiting players. We’re going to follow the same process we normally do for applications because it worked well for us before. This time we’re removing the bidding system. Successful candidates will be given a copy of our current franchise agreement to review.

Since we aren’t there on the ground, we need to understand that whoever takes the reins is competent and understands how things work on an ownership level, not just a player level. We’ve put together 5 of the core values we look for in a potential Guildmaster. In your application we’d like you to touch on all of these plus anything else you think is important. This is your opportunity to show us you know how things run behind the scenes and gives examples, history and lessons learned through failure/success. Extra consideration goes to applicants who have been an active member of the community and currently do not run a fantasy LARP (or have plans to).

With the desired qualities we’ve included a few bullets as examples of the kind of mentality we’re looking for. Not everybody is cut to run a LARP of this caliber. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just a thing. We could write a book on each of the points so if you want more breakdown, just ask.

Five Qualities We’re Looking For in a Guildmaster (in no order of importance):

1) Sense of Long Game Balance

- Not selling items / power for money

- Not flooding your game with frags

- Acceptance of losing players if the action brings in more new players

- Getting along with other guilds, even if you are competing for players. One big failure we see often is the concept that guilds that compete are bad. Competition breeds excellence and you profit more from travelling players than you do from isolated players. Related: Getting along with Underworld Global. We might not agree and you have to sometimes accept you won’t always get your way.

2) Discretion

- Remembering your part of a management team of Underworld Global. You’re not a player anymore

- Recognizing that “passing the buck” to avoid looking bad to your playerbase hurts the game for everybody as a whole

- Remembering you have a direct line of communication with Global and can express your emotions or concerns through it rather than in public

3) Safety of your customers

- Recognizing you have a responsibility to foster a safe and positive game environment for your customers

- Removing / suspending / banning problem players at the expense of monetary loss

- Removing / suspending / banning problem players at the expense of friendships

4) Saying No

- The customer is not always right

- Understanding what players want and what players need are often different

5) Prioritizing New Players

- Veteran players are important but are not the main focus of a LARP. New players bring in friends, bring in new stories and content, and lower Average Player Level. Treat both veterans and new players equally but realize that it is the new players that give business continuity in almost any situation.

- A keen sense of marketing and advertising to draw in new players

If you’re interested please send us an email with notice of intent as soon as possible. Include your full name and the name of any partners. This is just so we know ahead of time whois in the running and we can start some background checks with folks we trust in the area. Full proposals should be in our inbox by August 1st, 2020. As a side note, we’re not keen on surprises. If you have something in your history or past that is going to work against you here, be honest with us. Despite the local rumour mill we have no favourites, and we have groomed nobody for this role. This is 100% anybody's game. Remember, please be respectful. This isn’t a chance to take pot shots at your enemies, former Guildmasters, or other players.

Once our application deadline has passed we will post a list of applicants and request private feedback from the playbase on each of the candidates to get a sense of how well they fit into the community.

Good luck!

All communication should be directed to comments@larp.ca

-UW Global

I'm dying here a little bit because just as I was about to post this, our Instagram account automatically uploaded an old photo of a Dark Elf at a convention we ran. This ain't always easy, yo!

Ok, here we go...

This is a couple of days later than we expected, but we wanted to make sure we did this right. This is our roadmap for making LARPing in North America more inclusive and attractive to potential LARPers of colour. This will ultimately help break down cultural barriers that pre exist within our community and help dismantle systemic racism that is prevalent everywhere we look. Being a 18+ horror fantasy LARP means we’re coming at this with a bit of a disadvantage. Our world and stories are gritty, dark, and we touch on a lot of sociologically and ethically challenging topics that sometimes have direct real world counterparts. We often find some players want to take those elements and challenge them, because in the real world they are not acceptable. We often have to remind people that this is fiction and that we need terrible things in our fiction so you can feel amazing defeating it. The counter to that though, is that we need to make sure our players are safe, both physically and emotionally. We need to establish boundaries.

The fix here is mostly policy. By writing OOG rules we can ensure that when we run sensitive stories or write lore that fits IG but contains problematic elements within the real world, that we are creating a clear divide between our fiction and reality. This in turn will lessen the likelihood of unintentional traumatic occurrences.

Here are the changes we are committed to making.

Racism

We have spoken at length to a large amount of our players of colour and our Guildmasters. All have identified that IG racism is part of the dark fantasy/horror experience they have come to love and combat as their characters. To accommodate this, policy will be released shortly that will identify potentially problematic scenarios and real world racist iconography that could be mistaken as harmful or hateful actions OOG. The policy will force Guildmasters and Shapers to offer options on an OOG level to the player affected by any of these factors. These options will still be equal in detriment and force. Example: Should a character be found guilty of a crime and punished by lashes (a punishment often used in real life slavery), the player will be given an option to instead be stoned or beaten. This policy will include such iconography as manacles, whips, hangings/nooses, slavery, indentured labour, etc. (Release: August 2020)

Global policy shall be written to ban the use of any real world racial slur from our IG vocabulary (Release: Already Release, formal inclusion in Company Agreement (August 2020)

Real World Culture

While we cannot commit to tying real world cultures into races or geographical locations in the game world, we do recognize that we have failed in diversifying our World Building as a whole. Starting with the new edition of the Monster Manual we will be introducing monsters, heroes, lore and the like from multiple cultural myths and history. Players may continue to incorporate real world cultures into their histories and kit, however, our current policy will stand strong. Guildmasters are expected to ensure that a player's appreciation of a RL culture does not cross into mockery and that best intentions are always forefront. (Release: Sept 2020)

Representation

A formal commitment by each Guildmaster and Underworld LARP Global to include more visual representation in their promotions and advertising. Equally as important, is to pay those people in real world currency. (Release: Immediately)

Races

Rulebook Changes

Carnal Fae - Black portion of the makeup to be changed to Grey (Release: Sept 2020)

Brownies (Monster) - To be replaced with the release of the next edition of the Monster Manual (Release: Sept 2020)

Minotaur - Makeup requirements to now include a white or light coloured muzzle (Release: Sept 2020)

Ogres - Warpaint Requirement increased to 25% of makeup coverage on face. (Release: Sept 2020)

Policy Changes

Part of the reason we can use certain colours of makeup on our faces to represent race is because when combined with other makeup or prosthetic requirements, they do not look like what is historically deemed problematic in the real world. Removing those additional elements but keeping the problematic ones when leaving the site, however, makes a problem again. Policy to be created to deny any full makeup race from removing pieces or aspects of their makeup and then leaving game or site. All makeup either stays on or all makeup comes off. Example: A Minotaur cannot remove their horns and makeup, leaving only brown, and go into town for breakfast. Failure to adhere to this policy will potentially lose you access to playing that race and potential wasted frags. (Release: August 2020)

Lore

A two tiered “do as we say, not as we do” system is to be implemented around the concept of homophobia. Homophobia will continue to exist in game so that characters who wish to defeat it can continue to do so. However, it is not something that is playable by PCs. This is the first time we’ve ever used a “do as we say, not as we do” type of policy and we reserve the right to tweak it as needed. The reason this particular subject gets a unique solution is that you cannot be homophobic towards another character IG without using real world slurs. Unlike races, there is no “made up” sexuality in the Underworld that we could use to fabricate insulting or demeaning attacks. There are only the problematic ones that exist today in the real world. (Release: Immediately, formal inclusion in Company Agreement August 2020)

We will review our lore to ensure that there is no over abundance of homophobia in our race, culture, and faction lore. (Release: Sept 2020)

Years back we recognized our Ajaunti race was similar enough to the many real world nomadic people and multiple cultures. The race was changed and lore altered so that this race was more celebrated and less scorned. We’ve discovered there are still legacy lore in other pages that reference the old Aja so we will clean those up (Release: Sept 2020).

Salam: Alterations to the lore/tenets to be introduced to clarify that the definitions used are Salam’s and not the OOG beliefs held by any UW lore writer. Further changes to the language to include “all disadvantaged or poor families”, not just those Salam has deemed primitive or uncivilised. Salam is a bad guy, we are not. (Release: August 2020)

Cultural/Racial Representation in Superpowers: More visually diverse representation planned for the mortal forms of Dragons, as the lore gets released. This planned representation is not just limited to race. (Release: As they get written)

Races without real world languages to be given them from a more diverse pool of non-Western Languages. (Release: Oct 2020)

Sybil: Text to be added to clarify that Sybil is PoC God with a disability and that’s not a bad thing. Sybil is not silenced by being mute. She speaks volumes through her actions. (Release: August 2020)

Policy

Global policy to prevent the use of all real world slurs towards gender, race, sexuality and the like. (Release: Already Release, formal inclusion in Company Agreement (August 2020)

Inclusion of the Opt Out policy to be prominently displayed in Underworld LARP’s rulebook and wiki (Release: Sept 2020)

Red Armband

Graphic and design requirements to be implemented and rolled down to Guildmasters to ensure our designs are not mistaken for Nazi imagery (Release: Nov 2020)

Policy to be designed to force removal of red armbands when leaving site. (Release: Aug 2020)

Conclusion

Please make note that both these policy changes and this roadmap are fluid and ever changing as we learn and grow. What is acceptable today might become unacceptable tomorrow, so we reserve the right to update as required. This ensures our game is accessible and appealing to potential new players of colour and to our current ones. If we missed the mark on something, or you weren’t able to attend our Town Hall on Racism in LARP and you want to have a voice, please contact us at comments@larp.ca

Underworld LARP is a trendsetter. We trailblaze. We don’t abide by traditional LARPing stereotypes and standards, we rewrite them. We have done so for over 25 years, now. We legitimately and sincerely want to hear how we can do better and how we can change the culture of LARPing to draw in any who might normally shy away from it.

-UW Global
