what about something like a thumbprint dipped in ink? would that work in place of a wax seal?

I disagree with that point in general and that R/W has no mechanical value.

Some may argue that using fingerprints is too modern, but ignoring the idea that you can identify a person via their thumbprint and instead on the "it's a replacement for an X" I think it's probably fine. We're getting far into specifics here, though.
